Alex Schmidt (b. Chicago, IL) is an artist based in Brooklyn and Cuddebackville, NY. Their forthcoming Hunter MFA thesis exhibition is November 9-19, 2023.
Schmidt has held solo exhibitions at Leslie-Lohman Museum, Rachel Comey, and 21st Street for Critical Practices, Inc. Schmidt has performed at MoMA PS1, NADA, the Kitchen, PERFORMA, Essex Flowers, Duplex NYC, Abrons Art Center, American Medium, and others. They have participated in group exhibitions at Shoot the Lobster, Sculpture Center, Visual AIDs, Project Art Distribution, New Collectors Gallery, and others.
Schmidt is the Co-Founder and former Director of Dyke Soccer and helped transition the project to collective leadership in 2020 with the support of Coop Fund and Artists’ Coop. Schmidt also does Fall Into the Gay, available at Public Media Institute and Fredericks + Mae.
Schmidt is the audio performer for Dykette by Jenny Fran Davis (Macmillan 2023).
Schmidt’s work has been featured in the New Yorker, Vogue, The Guardian, Paper Magazine, Girls Like Us, Office Magazine, Dazed Digital, Elite Daily, Queer York City (S1 Ep. 5 + 6 and S2 Ep. 2) Dazed & Confused Magazine, Cosmopolitan, New York Magazine, Brooklyn Art Council, Broadly, and Art 21.
